Tapis Rouge is showing its new collections at the prestigious Rossana Orlandi Gallery during Milan Design Week 2019.
This year the trend-of-the-moment in terms of architecture and design is a luxury reincarnation of the Bauhaus movement, with specific interest falling on reinterpreting the legendary concepts of architects and designers such as Le Corbusier, Gio Ponti and Carlo Scarpa, among others. The new minimalistic current can be seen as the contemporary iteration of the Bauhaus movement, the strictness of modernism has evolved into an aim to combine form with function, creating an immersive experience of style, objects and tones.
Working with the aim of constant innovation in mind, much like the artists of 20th century, Tapis Rouge plays with new colour palettes, textures and materials, seen in the juxtaposition of bright and pale colours, as well as a gradation of thickness and pile height to break stereotypes of “classical” rug technique.
INNOVATIVE DESIGNS: AMBIANCE
This spirit of innovation facilitated the creation of the 2019 additions to the Ambiance collection. An homage to the cutting-edge work of architects Le Corbusier, Santiago Calatrava and Frank Gehry, as well as interior designer Alberto Pinto, the Ambiance collection continues to take cues from trends in design and architecture, reaffirming its place as an experimental, contemporary collection in the brand’s oeuvre.
VIBRANT COLORS AND IRREGULAR SHAPES
Another addition to the Tapis Rouge roster is the Frozen collection designed by Olga Malyeva and inspired by the landscapes of Russian winters, Lake Baikal and sketches of urban environments by Peter Bronfin. The collection personifies memories through its apposition of bright colours, symbolising childhood and youthful vigour, and its more pale and monochromatic designs, reflecting the bleak magic of a snowy landscape.
ICEBERG RUG: A SOPHISTICATED GAME OF COLOR AND THREE THOUSAND HOURS OF HAND-KNOTTING
At this year’s Fuorisalone, Tapis Rouge is proud to present the pinnacle of its artisanal technique, the Iceberg rug, created specifically for the exhibition. This exceptional masterpiece took over a year of scrupulous high-skilled work: 700 hours of sketching, 600 hours of technical map development, 450 hours of colour and texture adjustments and 1200 hours of weaving, cutting, washing and drying.
Made from the best-selected yarns of New Zealand wool and the finest Chinese silk, the Iceberg’s uniqueness lies in its vast combination of thirty shades of blue, as well as the continuous variation of pile heights, it is the quintessence of skill. The distinctly feminine essence of the rug, reminiscent of the hidden expanses of the ocean, draws the audience in with its enigmatic and mysterious depth of perception, seemingly imprisoning the world’s secrets in the deepest shades of its colours.
The contrast of the light blue and almost white of the snow surrounding the water’s depths symbolise purity and the eternal desire for harmony and perfection.
This concept of the fluidity and movement of water in its various states is carried over into the booth, designed by architect Natalia Zelenova. The Iceberg represents water and depth in the states of ice and liquid, similarly the booth takes the square as its module and displays it in several materials, such as plastic, glass, netting and soft textures.
By immersing the Iceberg in this module, Zelenova displays the core concept of the rug and the stand as harmony and homogeneity, playing with the planes of the square and creating a sensory deprivation chamber for the centrepiece.
